Medicine: An Ever-Growing Field by Megan - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
The field of medicine is one that is always evolving, expanding, and improving. To keep up with the rapid, constant changes, doctors and nurses of all fields of medicine are always learning. Medical professionals leave work everyday with new knowledge and more questions. Curiosity and a drive to provide the best care possible is what makes medical professionals truly lifelong students.
I found my passion for the medical field as a sophomore in high school while training to become a lifeguard. I was intrigued by the variety of medical issues that could happen to a person and the role I played in helping them in their time of need. I realized that this passion had to go beyond lifeguarding and I wanted to make this my career. I became a Medical Explorer, student in the Health Occupations of America Program, a Hospice volunteer, and a Medical Assistant to explore as much as I could of the medical field at a young age.
My dream is to become an Emergency Room Physician. The beauty of this career is that every single day is completely different from the one before it. Everyday I will go into my work with an open mind and the confidence that I will be more knowledgeable by the end of it. Being a medical professional is not about knowing how to handle every situation; it is about what you do when you do not know.
In 25 years, I will still be learning. Medical research is constantly being done by doctors around the world, new technologies are being produced, and improvements are constantly being made on the standard of care that is possible. It is a very important responsibility as a medical professional to keep up with these changes and contribute to the advancements of the medical field.
As a medical professional, I will learn something new everyday and strive to be the best physician I can be. I am excited and proud of the career I have chosen and hope that I will change many lives by keeping an open mind and never stop learning.
