Opportunity by Megan - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Opportunities abound in today’s college experiences. Students are blessed with chances to double-major, study abroad, and represent their university through sports. Academic advisors encourage students to take advantage of as many programs as possible and explore multiple fields of study by taking a variety of courses. Through organizations and clubs, students are able to meet hundreds of classmates and begin networking for their future careers. Additionally, students are able to study abroad, for several weeks, a summer, or even an entire semester. Therefore, the word that I feel best describes my excitement to attend college is opportunity. During my four years attending a university, I look forward to having more opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed than I can even begin to imagine.
I already strive to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way, whether in the classroom, as a player on the soccer pitch, or in my community. I realize that a strong education opens up a plethora of opportunities to not only succeed in our world, but also to make a difference to those around me. For example, anytime a teacher suggests the opportunity to earn extra credit or take our learning further through an additional project, I tackle the assignment head on. Additionally, I have been a starter on my Varsity soccer team for all four years of high school, because I take the opportunities given to me to succeed and grow as a central midfielder. I plan for each game with the same mindset, no matter who our opposition is. I see a soccer game not just as a chance to win, but also an opportunity to enhance chemistry with my teammates, further develop our skills, and leave a legacy of success and hard work to our future soccer programs. Furthermore, my school counselor has shared several ways to benefit our community through volunteerism, and I try to take advantage of each opportunity that I can. Through tutoring younger students, serving lunches to underprivileged children, and helping to lead summer reading programs at the library, I consistently strive to give back to my community.
I look forward to my college experience with the same opportunistic mindset. I will be given chances to learn and earn a degree. In high school, I have enjoyed every subject, and I am excited to choose my classes next year and concentrate on Business. I plan to major in International Business, and intern in an office that serves countries worldwide. Additionally, I plan to use the skills that I learn in my business classes to start a nonprofit organization that will provide basic necessities, such as food, water, clothing, and shelter, to underprivileged communities. I have dreamed of starting this nonprofit now, while I am still in high school, but I do not feel that I have the necessary skills quite yet. Again, this is yet another opportunity to gain that knowledge and make a difference in the world during my college years.
An International Business student has a unique perspective on the world, one which can only be gained from experiencing multiple cultures and ways of life. International Business students are given the opportunity to study abroad, many times for an entire semester. I look forward to this time when I will be able to take classes in another country, learn how to live in a new culture, and potentially master a second language. My years in college will allow me to have this life-changing opportunity, maybe even more than once!
As my time in high school is rapidly drawing to a close, my anticipation of the opportunities that I will have in college continues to build. I am a driven person who seeks to make the most of each and every opportunity that comes my way. During college, I will also have chances to join or potentially start clubs and organizations on-campus. I will be able to learn the business skills necessary not only to work internationally, but also to start a nonprofit organization to provide for those in need. I will take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad and experience the world through a different culture and perspective. I wish to attend college because the opportunities to learn, study, and grow are quite endless, indeed.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship!
