The Ambassador Who Missed the Revolution by Megan - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
It was the greatest fight the world had ever seen. Newly found America against world renown Great Britain, the underdog story that was greater than Rudy, Hoosiers, and Rocky combined. The fight had drama, intensity, and most importantly freedom. America would never be the same and neither would Britain’s ego. America’s foundation was being set up and guess who wasn’t there for any part of it? Mr. President Thomas Jefferson himself. At this time, Jefferson was an Ambassador in France which caused him to miss the entire Revolution and come back for the foundation building part of American history.
I would love to sit down with Thomas Jefferson to discuss what it must have been like to leave a colony where they were a territory of Britain with a monarchy in place only to return to a new-found country who wants to set up a successful republic democracy. The turn around there must have been different in addition to coming back already elected into the first official Presidential Cabinet.
Jefferson also had to deal with strong headed Federalist, Mr. Alexander Hamilton. I would love to know if Hamilton was as impulsive and stubborn as the Broadway hit painted him to be. Jefferson was handed a lot of things in his life so I also want to know how he dealt with opposition or lack of position with Aaron Burr as his vice president. Jefferson’s ideology would be interesting to hear and I would love to hear what he felt his part in the building of America was and if it matches up with the one known in our history books.
