Living My Dream by Megan - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to play basketball at the collegiate level, and to study medicine at a great college. Now those years of hard work are paying off. I recently committed to play women’s basketball at Emory University in GA. There I plan to study medicine and become a physician’s assistant while being part of an amazing basketball family.
Basketball taught me to challenge myself both physically and mentally, how to work well with a team, and has given me life skills that will translate into my professional career. It has always kept me focused, balanced, and humble. I am on the smaller side for a basketball player so I work twice as hard as many others to achieve my goals. That also applies to my academics; learning doesn’t always come easy to me. I have to study harder than most, and I believe that has given me a stronger work ethic.
I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to study medicine at a top ranked college. The countless hours of training have paid off in a way that will make me able to give back to my community, and my patients. My life’s goal is to provide quality health care to people in need and to volunteer for those who can’t afford care. Every person has the right to be treated and I look forward to giving back. I volunteer as much as I can and I often do so off the record. My mother believes that you should not “take credit” for volunteering. Volunteering is giving of yourself, and that is the greatest gift of all.
