From Forgetting to Comprehending by Megan - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

Studying is something that I have struggled with throughout my high school career. It is not that I don’t study, but rather that my brain does not easily comprehend what it is studying. I always seemed to be one of those students that would study for hours on end and somehow end up with the lowest grade in the class. This was frustrating for me because I was truly passionate about my academics. I knew that, in the long run, my high school accomplishments would bring me into a successful college career. With that being said, I took a step to participate in a tutoring center. This center helped me recognize what I truly needed to be comprehending during my study sessions.

The most effective study method that I took from there was, what I consider, the “skim” method. This process includes skimming the main topic of any chapter I am reading, and scanning the questions that may follow. This allows me to look for what I should be truly comprehending. It was a benefit to me because it helped me memorize and comprehend the information that was truly necessary. Which was a true struggle for me. Now I am a successful honor roll student with good grades all around.
