My Advice to High School Freshmen by Megan - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
High school is a roller coaster and with this roller coaster, you have to always be prepared for things that will come your way. The tricky part is enjoying the crazy ride. After entering the doors of the upper school building, attitude towards education, procrastination, peer pressure and bullying, along with more become factors that play into how your high school experience will be. There will be classes that are hard, teachers that may be tough to work with, and students that will add to the insanity. However, these classes, teachers, and students are what makes your high school experience a joy ride.
The first thing to remember when going into high school is to make the best out of every situation. Do not let one bad day influence how you approach your school work. Education is what makes a person feel rich, whatever you do, do not compromise your education because of social situations. Do not be afraid to ask for extra help, whether it mean staying after class a little to talk to your teacher or finding a tutor for the course, always put forth the extra effort to get the help you need. One thing I love doing is talking to my teachers. I have been able to form a good relationship with each of my teachers which has made it feel easier and more comfortable to converse with them about the course.
One of the hardest things students face is procrastination. It is extremely difficult to avoid it, especially when it seems like a million things are happening all at once. Form a list of your projects and homework. Make notes on what the assignment is, what the assignment may consist of, and when it is due. Time management is key to relieving some stress in high school. Get smaller assignments out of the way first, then spend about thirty minutes to an hour working on the bigger projects. Lastly, pay attention in class! Procrastination actually starts before you even get home. Some teachers allow students to start homework early and even go over some homework problems in class. If you pay attention, you may find that you can get homework done earlier. This also allows you to ask questions and get help on theories that you might not fully understand. Your teachers are there to help you succeed, pay attention and do not be afraid to ask questions.
Going into high school, changes may begin to happen in your friend group. Friends may come and go. Everyone is trying to find themselves and sometimes it means that they walk out of a friend group to join another. My advice is to try to remain friendly with everyone. School is stressful enough, knowing that you always have a friend in someone no matter where discovering yourself takes you is a huge relief. Two major social problems in high school are peer pressure and bullying. Being a friend and reminding others that they do not have to do certain things to be “cool,” and standing up for others when they need someone is the best thing a person can do for another. Being a good person is a natural thing, helping others and being nice should be something you want to do. If it were you in their shoes, you would hope someone would be there for you too.
You may also experience peer pressure and bullying first hand. The number one thing to remember is the values that you have set for yourself and that no matter what someone says to you, you are worth more than gold. Do not allow yourself to fall into peer pressure and do something that you know you should not be doing. You do not have to do what so-and-so is doing in order to fit in. Besides, fitting in is SO over-rated! Be yourself, and own the skin you walk in!
Overall high school will be an insane ride down a very windy road. Always remember to look at the bright side of things. Stay on top of your work, and make life easier for you by not falling behind. Be a friend to everyone, even those who may not be a friend to you. Remember your values and stand up for your morals. Lastly, and most importantly, be yourself because no one will ever be cooler and more amazing then the person you are.
