The Change in The Education System by Meera - July 2022 Scholarship Essay

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." by Malcolm X is a quote that comes to mind whenever someone brings up education. It reminds me of how poorly schools have been preparing students for life after graduation. To really support students, education must change.
The United States Education System is ranked 14th in the world with the odds that a young person in the U.S. will be in higher education if his or her parents do not have an upper secondary education at just 29%, one of the lowest levels among OECD countries. This is due to multiple factors that we face here in the U.S that cause these numbers to be so low. To begin bringing change in the education system, we must first understand the issues that we face inside classrooms. We must dig deep and discover the root cause. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that 14 percent of all schools in the United States are overcrowded. Overcrowded classrooms make it difficult to learn and even more difficult for teachers to be effective at a time when students require more attention than ever before to succeed. This problem can be solved by building new schools to ensure that every student receives the assistance and attention they need to succeed in their daily lives. Furthermore, many teachers arrive at schools and educational facilities unmotivated to help their students, due mainly to the extremely poor working conditions, unreasonable demands, and unrealistic expectations that they face every day. According to the ToughNickel website, the combination of these factors makes the teaching profession unbearable for even the best educators. The next ten years have the potential to be the change that every school, teacher, and student requires. These simple actions could bring about the necessary change for our expanding society.
It only takes one individual to initiate the change for a more stable future. Parents, society, and schools must all work together to rebuild the educational system for today's students and future generations. We must act now, before it is too late, and be the change that allows children to take charge of their lives and create their own paths. This will put them at the forefront of innovation, which will improve their lives forever.
