Let's Study Abroad by Meaghen - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Studying abroad is a great starting place to begin seeing and learning about life outside of your town, and I think it should be a requirement for all college students. It is amazing how much the world has to offer; Things that are not found on television shows, in magazines and cannot be experienced like visiting another country. There are so many academic benefits in traveling to other countries and learning about their cultures and way of life. Students who studied abroad would be able to establish lifelong friendships, connect with native students and experience the different challenges of a diverse country. Participating in international studies would help open up your mind to view opinions from an internationally diverse community.
Another benefit is the different languages you would be exposed to. Being a part of a culture that speaks a different language would give you a chance to broaden your language skills whether it be learning a new language or taking part in the language you are surrounded by. In fact, many programs do not require any knowledge of a foreign language, but before traveling, your school would help prepare you if you needed some experience to prevent the language barrier. This could help you in your future career and help prepare you for an international workplace. It shows your potential employer that you work well with others in different environments, it shows that you can be independent and that you are resourceful. Studying abroad would help you appreciate things that you may take for granted, and help you to mature.
Studying abroad is a way to get you out of your comfort zone, and help prepare you for the future by appreciating diversity, embracing new languages, and help you develop communication skills that are necessary to succeed. These are important skills to have that you would not be able to learn in a classroom. The best part about studying abroad is that you can participate in this all while earning credit toward your degree! It is a life changing opportunity that you should take advantage of!
