My gap year by Meagan - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

New research suggests that pursuing a gap year increases a person’s well-being. A gap year is an opportunity to see the world in a different light and even save money for school. I would make the most of a gap year by going to Paris and studying fashion. In high school, I knew that I wanted to be in the fashion industry but didn’t know to what degree. I would attend Parsons Paris, make friends and find my passion through the gap year.

Traveling has always been very important to me. My yearly family vacations consisted of trips to the beach and Disney World. Traveling with my family encouraged my curiosity and gave me a sense of wanderlust. When it was time to apply to college, I had no idea what I wanted to major in or where I wanted to go to school. But, I did know that I wanted to travel and I had a serious interest in fashion.

Paris is the fashion mecca. To some, fashion was born there. To me, it would be an opportunity to learn about fashion and myself. Spending a year in Paris before going to college, would’ve granted me the opportunity to immerse myself in culture, language, cuisine and art. I would be able to study under fashion’s most prestigious people. My passion of writing and fashion would’ve collaborated as a teen, and my fashion blog would be drastically different. I would also have saved money on tuition, and be a stronger student as an international traveler.

Studying in Paris would build me professionally, spiritually, and personally. A gap year is a privilege and I would use it to my full advantage.
