Is the person you love, yourself? by Meagan - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

How do you view yourself? Go the bathroom, take a deep breath, and as you release it allow your mind to zoom, allow your thoughts to wander as you consider everything about life. Look in the mirror and ask yourself,“Do I love myself? Am I happy? Am I sad? Am I uncertain of who I even am, truly?” Too often, we focus on what we are doing and what we can obtain through that. School, work, friendships, anything. Yet, how many times can you recollect yourself stopping and asking if what you are doing actually grants peace or if it simply gets you by for another day. Day after day we tend to fall into a pattern; a way of life we deem to be normal. Tell me, what is so satisfying about being normal?
The problem with a pattern is that after so long it becomes a boring blur. The pattern fades and eventually goes out of style. Days become remembered from one major stressful event to the next. They become categorized by how school/work goes, the traffic you faced on the way home, or the homework assignment you have tonight. Settling for a life and a sense of self that you are not genuinely happy with is okay, but nothing extraordinary.
We need to explore! We need to face heartbreak, despair, and weak points in our lives. Those are the moments that build character. Those moments allow us to focus on what we do not like and what we do. It allows us to see more than one side of a story. Acknowledge any negative thoughts you have, and figure out what you can do to turn them upside down and create positive outcomes. Strive for progress in every form of life you can. At some point you have to draw a line that separates you from every other student that surrounds you.Accept the differences in others and provide a sense of gratefulness for it. Without individuality among peers, there would be no progress in this world. Make today that day. Make the line and fall in love with the process of it. Do not expect people to change and do not expect life to give you lemons. Work hard for the ingredients, and prepare it without a recipe the best way you can. In the end, love the bitterness and the sweetness it provides, for without them, it would not be lemonade.
