Your Grandma Is Always Watching by McKinzie - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I think of academic success, I think of my grandma. My grandma was not allowed to go to school when she was growing up, but that did not stop her from trying. She had always tried to go to the school that her 8 brothers went to, but to no luck, she was never let in. So she would sit outside and listen and then, when her brothers got home, she would help them with all their homework. Her mother even forced her to stop helping them because she was getting smarter than her and making a better “man”. Her mom eventually taught her all the household duties because she needed to become a “woman”. She was eventually well versed in all the household chores, in which she passed them down to me. Let’s just say we have came a long way from mopping the floor with soap and a rag. We now have a swiffer.

Even though my grandma might not college or high school degree, she is the smartest woman I know. And I know, if she looked down from heaven and saw me wasting my chance to get an education, she would be very disappointed. And no one wants that.
