A Recipe For Success by McKenna - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

Most students dread the day the word “project” comes out of the teacher’s mouth, especially if it’s preceded by the word “group”. My best friend and I, however, live for those words. We do our best work by being paired up; not because we’re two mediocre people who can’t put together a decent project on our own, but because when we put our minds together, we can make one that the audience won’t forget, and have fun at the same time.
MaKenzie and I take most of the same classes, and the teachers basically think of us as one person known as “M&M”. They know that we’ll always be together on projects, and even make exceptions when everybody else is in large groups or working individually. Then, the two of us spend hours and hours slaving away at the project (just kidding). The key to our noteworthy presentations is knowing our way around PowerPoint; that way, we can complete it in a reasonable amount of time, while still having a life outside of homework. We’ve put together intense videos using a single slide, and even utilized PowerPoint to create an in-class game show. Once, MaKenzie and I even got interviewed for the local newspaper for our presentation on Music of the Civil War—no joke, look it up!—while we laughed to ourselves because we only spent a total of 4 hours at most working on it.
My advice for people who struggle to find success in school projects: get savvy with your resources, and find somebody or something that makes it enjoyable while keeping you on task. I won’t have MaKenzie to help me wow my future professors and employers with our amazing presentations but I’ll be able to accomplish that on my own—for I’ll always have the skills I developed, the knowledge I gained, and a sure recipe for success.
