A Meaningful and Informative Dinner by McKenna - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I were to be given the opportunity to have dinner with any of the forty-five U.S. Presidents I would have to choose President Franklin D. Roosevelt (32nd President, Years 1933-1945). President FDR would be one of the greatest presidents to sit down and have a conversation with. Along with a great many presidential triumphs, he has had many personal triumphs. FDR was diagnosed with polio and proceeded to serve almost four terms in the most stressful job, the longest amount of time a president has held that position. I would want to ask him how he overcame his opponents and his disease. After, I would ask him how he created the New Deal and the other laws that helped the American people.

I am also very curious on what his opinions are of today’s politicians and today's prevalent issues. I would hope that during this dinner there would be other people present, so they could ask other questions that I might not have considered asking. Also, these other people would be able to support my claims of FDR’s opinions because if this dinner were to happen I would want to share that knowledge with the world. By sharing FDR’s opinions I might be able to help change the way certain issues are handled because most people know who FDR is and that they should trust him. The American people trust others who help them succeed and FDR enabled Americans to get back on their feet after the crippling depression of the 1930’s.

FDR made extremely difficult, but very successful choices; which makes me believe that he would provide valuable insight on what elected officials should do, along with what the American public should do. There are many other presidents that can contribute to today’s issue, but FDR has the most experience with being an elected official and still caring for the American people. I feel that his character and actions along with my curiosity would result in a meaningful and informative dinner.
