Growing up, school wasn’t always easy for me. I struggled with reading, writing, history, and many other subjects. Comparing myself to others made me feel insecure because I didn’t believe I was as smart or as good at things as my friends and family. However, during my junior year of high school, I took Honors Pre-Calculus, and my teacher profoundly changed my outlook on education and myself. Her name was Mrs. Ducaj. She had been at the school for years and had even taught both of my parents. Despite her age, her knowledge was immense and truly impacted me in the best way possible.
I often found it difficult to comprehend readings and internalize complex questions, but math was one thing I truly understood. I always thought I was an average to below-average student who worked hard but struggled to grasp certain concepts. When I entered Pre-Calculus, I expected it to be another math class I would do well in but find nothing special about. However, when she handed back the results from our first test, I received a 96%. This score was a shock, as the class was challenging, but it gave me a newfound sense of confidence. Later that day, she asked why I was so surprised by my grade. After discussing my struggles with school, she told me that I was much smarter than I realized and just needed the right person and approach to succeed in life. She shared that she had a similar experience growing up and that discovering her aptitude for math gave her the confidence to excel in other subjects and life as well.
Mrs. Ducaj made me feel heard, confident, and, most importantly, unique. I realized I was more than just a student; I was special in my own way. No one would think a simple conversation with a math teacher could have such a significant impact, but for me, it did. This conversation led to a profound realization, and I started learning in ways that made sense for me. I adopted a pace that worked best for me and stuck with it. Because of this, I have achieved a 4.2 GPA, honor roll, earned an athletic scholarship to play at a high caliber Division 2 school, and pursued my dreams. I learned to approach challenges in ways that suit me, whether in softball, breaking down plays or concepts, or in life, gaining wisdom from the world around me. Mrs. Ducaj gave me confidence, inspired me to strive for my goals, and showed me that I didn’t have to settle for mediocrity.
Throughout my educational journey, Mrs. Ducaj proved to be an instrumental figure, empowering me to discover my potential and guiding me towards academic success. Her guidance and belief in my abilities helped build my confidence and allowed me to approach challenges with a newfound mindset. Mrs. Ducaj's impact reached far beyond the classroom; she fundamentally transformed not only my academic performance but also the way I view myself and my capabilities. I will always carry the lessons she taught me as I continue to navigate my path, forever grateful for the teacher who changed my life.
