Never Let Your Life Take Over by McKayla - April 2021 Scholarship Essay

Five years ago, I was in middle school thinking the classes were pretty hard, but I had a lot in store for me in the coming years. High school was a totally different experience than what I was expecting with it being a lot more challenging than what I thought it would be. The workload was way more than middle school, the classes also being a lot harder. I was quickly able to get the hang of everything as I went through high school, but a few classes still brought me down a few, but I always picked myself back up. However, a lot of that changed when quarantine hit.

During quarantine, I had two of the hardest classes I have ever taken through my high school. Those classes were pre-calculus honors and AP psychology. I had to do these classes online, and basically almost teach myself. This was a very hard task, not to mention it was hard to focus while being at home. I learn better in person, in the classroom, which is why I decided to go back traditionally for my senior year this past fall.

With all this being said, my advice to myself five years ago would be to not let my life get ahead of me. I kept pushing certain things off, things that were and are important because of lack of motivation for anything school related. All I wanted to do was go out and be out of the house, and this was because I was tired of being stuck in the house after quarantine. Over the past months I have regained my motivation because I remember the goals I want to achieve for my future, and I know these goals will not happen unless I do the work to make it happen.

Life offers many obstacles and distractions, and most of the time you lose track of things that need to be done, and that is what happened to me. I would tell my younger self this so I would be aware of the repercussions behind pushing things off, like missing deadlines or just barely making them, or crunching time to do school work and find money for college. Whatever the case may be, there are always repercussions to your actions, and I want my younger self to know that she needs to keep up with doing her work and not let life get in the way of accomplishing her dreams.
