The million-dollar question by McGuire - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
When going to college, everyone asks what you will study. What is your major going to be? For some, this is a million-dollar question, but I have been carefully calculating my options. I have weighed out each choice, and deciding the best path for my future. I wanted to be a biology major and become a field biologist, helping make real changes in our world for the greater good of our ecosystem. I thought about all of the good times that I had in nature, all of the hunting trips and hikes through lush forests and into the barren deserts. While this seemed to be the best choice, it did not fully encapture my whole view of my future.
Then I thought about all of the times that I had become an entrepreneur as a young child. Mowing lawns for the neighbors, selling golf balls I found on the local golf course, and painting address numbers on curbs. The satisfaction of knowing that people have chosen your service over others is a great feeling. I thought of being a business major, then I could have that feeling all of the time in my career. I thought that this was not a world-changing aspiration in the sense of my previous goals. Then I realized that being a businessman does not always mean a suit and tie for a large corporation. I can work with outdoor companies, and help run organizations that support the work of field biologists. But with a business major, I can take cutting-edge business models and apply them to those kinds of organizations. Thus, making them more efficient, and have a larger impact. I can find a way to satisfy both of my ambitions of being an entrepreneur and helping the world conserve natural resources. It is because of my life experiences of hustling to make side money and my addiction to the outdoors that I found my true calling of being a business major. Now, I can finally say that I have answered my million-dollar question.
