Valuable Lessons Learned by Maya - November 2013 Scholarship Essay
The quote that I feel most sums up my experience in high school was written by Margaret Mead saying “I learned the value of hard work by working hard.” What came about to me learning this lesson was unfortunately in a hard way. Over the course of my high school career from 9th up until now in the 12th grade something has been instilled in me, and that is hard work. I feel that without you can only get you so far, which may not be where you want it to be.
The value of hard work never really seemed important to me when I was in my earlier years of high school because I was easily getting by without having to experience very many struggles. But when I had kept this attitude for the entire duration of my sophomore year, I had become the victim of complacency. My grades for both semesters were very low and portrayed me just as I acted, Lazy. I was utterly shocked when I saw my semester grades and grateful that I had just barely passed some of my classes. I knew that my laziness had not gotten me to a place I wanted to be, and even though I was being slothful I knew how low grades in high school; could affect my transcript and G.P.A when I needed to apply to colleges. Thereafter I knew that I had to stop being lazy and step up to the plate in order for me to be as successful as I want.
Thereafter I was the most hardworking person I knew! In my junior year I was determined not to have a repeat of the prior year. Every assignment or project I gave 110 percent in order to showcase my hardworking abilities. I knew that my hard work would pay off and it did when my grades went from C’s to A’s and B’s. I even decide to take it a step further and pursue a competitive internship program called Genesys Works with over 900 applicants. I worked hard and was admitted into the program, then during the following summer I competed against the 300 other admitted students in speeches, professional activities, and skill building tournaments. After all of my hard work in the program and school I was rewarded with an internship with G.E Oil & Gas. I now work as an I.T intern with the company in my senior year repairing computers.
In conclusion, the value of hard work came to me when I found myself being complacent with just being an average student, but I knew that was not how I wanted to lead my life. So I made the decision to work harder than I ever had and even more than I could give. All my hard work has been paying off ever since and it still is each day.
