Guiding Light For Others by Maya - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Huddled under the dining table with my little brother, we witnessed two pairs of feet engaged in a disturbing dance of rage between our mom and her boyfriend. Those haunting moments became PTSD flashbacks, revealing the lasting impact of domestic abuse—both physical and psychological—leaving emotional turmoil for years to come.

Reflecting on my childhood experiences, I found myself compelled to address the prevalent mental health challenges within my community and learn more about the home lives of teens around me. I critically assessed programs, identified gaps, and found one that supports teens in their healing process.

Balancing rigorous coursework, I seamlessly integrated community service into my schedule, spending evenings providing solace and understanding. I volunteered as emotional support for teens at a nonprofit organization called 7 Cups. I had the opportunity to talk to those within my community and those from across the world.

Listening to teens share stories of abuse, depression, anxiety, and more was life changing. Each unique narrative brought tears and fueled my empathy, creating a deep resolve to major in Psychology with a concentration in mental health. This experience emphasized the impact of consistent emotional validation and inspired me to help bridge existing gaps preventing individuals from seeking help. Now, my academic path is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those silently suffering in my community.

Volunteering for 7 Cups has been a transformative journey, igniting within me a profound passion for mental health. The connections forged, the stories shared, and the impact witnessed have not only enriched my understanding but also deepened my commitment to fostering emotional well-being in every possible way.
