When I'm at peace by Maxwell - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I am a morning person, who enjoys an outdoor lifestyle that thrives on daylight. To me nature is peaceful, amazing and an integral part of my life. I love being outdoors and immersing myself in the natural creations this world has given to us. I have never felt more free than when I am walking around in the forest, on a beach, in the dunes or in a park, alone. The feeling as if I’m a thousand miles from nowhere. At this time, I can chose to turn and start walking toward the hillside on my left, or meander quietly to the stream on my right. I even have the choice to take a break, and lay down while absorbing the sunshine around me.
Specifically, over Thanksgiving break, I had a great experience with nature while I was hiking. This experience made me question my belief on free will, if it's a possibility or an illusion. I was in Eastern Oregon, the snow was consistently dumping for hours, visibility was limited and I was wandering through the woods feeling as free as ever. I felt as if I could do anything and there was nothing that could stop me. I could run, I could walk, I could even skip or jump. I could laugh, I could sing, I could yell at the top of my lungs and no one else would be affected by my actions. I was able to relax and take my time enjoying everything around me, the footprints left in the snow and the cool breeze hitting my face. The sky was filled with snowflakes and the birds were still chirping in the freezing weather. I felt as if the world was mine and nothing else was influencing my choices, I felt free.
I'm a morning person, the possibilities are endless when the sun is shining upon my choices, my display of free will.
