The New Year's Resolution by Max - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Every year people everywhere make New Year’s resolutions in attempt to better themselves. As a senior in high school getting ready to start college, I wanted to make a resolution that would make me more prepared for college. I decided that the one thing I needed to improve on the most was reading. So I made a resolution to read more.
Reading is a very important skill, and is one of the core components of education. My school, Springville Secondary School, focuses greatly on reading believing that if a student has great reading skills, then they can read to learn about anything they need. Sadly, I am not the strongest reader, and it showed when I took the ACT with a reading score six points lower than any other subject. I realized I had not read an entire novel since about sophomore year. This is why I made my resolution to read more.
So far my resolution has been going great. I found a good book to read on my kindle, and I read a chapter every night before I went to bed. I even finished the book I was reading. I retook the ACT and my reading score went up three points. I am currently reading Heaven is for Real, and I am reading two or three chapters before bed. I am even noticing that I enjoy reading in my free time, even when I am not about to go to bed. I am glad I made this resolution to improve myself as a student, and I intend to keep it all year.
