Making Languages a requirement by Maurita - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

Having lived in France most of my life, I have experienced what it is like not to have the opportunity to choose your own classes as it is in the United-States. In France (and most of Europe), taking a language is a requirement one must take in order to graduate. Indeed, children start learning English in kindergarten, then have to take a second language starting 6th grade. Why, might you ask?

Learning languages has been proven to offer several mental benefits. Indeed, based on a study led by Thomas Bak, knowing more than one language can stave off Alzheimer's and Dementia by about five years.
Secondly, the process of learning a new language involves a lot of memorizing, from the small basic vocabulary to the complex rules this new language holds. By doing so, specific muscles in the brain are strengthened, therefore improving memory.
Lastly, based on a study lead but the College Board, there seems to be a strong correlation between one's SAT score and knowing a second language. Indeed, bilingual students tend to score higher on standardized tests, such as the ACT or the SAT, especially in math and science.

It is difficult to learn a second language (knowing three, I can testify of it). However, the earlier people have the opportunity to learn a second language in school, the easier it will be for them to retain it in life and enjoy the benefits. I firmly believe that it is most necessary to make learning a second language a requirement, and I hope that it is for you too.
