Only a Sheet of Paper by Maureen - January 2014 Scholarship Essay
The method I most like to use to study is taking a piece of paper, splitting it down the middle, and writing the answer on one side and the question on the other. While the method is similar to using flash cards, I do not have to carry around a giant stack of cards, but just one piece of paper, which is less bulky and easier for me to carry around.
This method helps me because if I feel unsure of the answer, I can just flip the sheet right over and see what the correct answer is. The method has worked on Latin vocabulary quizzes, AP Calculus and Precalculus formula tests, and even when studying lines for the next play. I was surprised it worked in helping me study my lines, but since it did, that proved to me that a simple sheet of paper folded in half is the best way for me to study. It inspires repetition, and the repetition helps to remember the information better. In addition, the method is quick, because I’m just flipping and scanning a sheet, instead of many index cards.
This is beneficial to me because I know for a fact that I am a better student from this method of studying. When in middle school, I would not study for my spelling tests, and the grades showed. If I had thought to use this current method, I would have aced those tests, as my grades that I have gotten using this method have helped me out tremendously. Better learning is always a benefit, and I am glad I have found a surefire way to help me benefit mine.
