Calculating my Future with Actuarial Science by Matthew - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
When I get to college, I plan on majoring in Actuarial Science. This decision reflects both my academic interests and my long-term career goals. Actuarial Science is a field that combines mathematics, statistics, and business principles to analyze risk and uncertainty—skills that I not only excel in but also genuinely enjoy applying. The idea of using data to predict future outcomes, especially in areas such as finance, insurance, and healthcare, fascinates me. I believe this major is the perfect fit for my strengths, interests, and aspirations.
From an early age, I have always gravitated toward math and problem-solving. Whether it was solving complex equations or identifying patterns in data, I found satisfaction in uncovering logical solutions. Over time, my interests expanded to include economics and finance. I became intrigued by how businesses and governments use data to make informed decisions. When I discovered that actuarial science sits at the intersection of math, statistics, and real-world financial problem-solving, I knew it was the path I wanted to follow.
What especially appeals to me about actuarial science is the way it combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Actuaries don’t just work with numbers—they use those numbers to help organizations manage risk and make smart decisions about the future. Whether it's determining insurance premiums, evaluating pension plans, or forecasting the impact of natural disasters, actuaries play a key role in creating financial stability. I find that responsibility both intellectually challenging and meaningful.
Another reason I chose this major is the strong career outlook it offers. Actuarial science is consistently ranked as one of the best careers in terms of job security, salary, and work-life balance. Knowing that I’m working toward a profession that is in high demand and valued across industries gives me confidence and motivation. Additionally, the actuarial career path is one that values continual learning, with professional exams that provide a structured progression of knowledge and skills. I find this kind of challenge motivating and look forward to the commitment it requires.
Beyond the technical side, I am drawn to the communication aspect of the field. A successful actuary needs to explain complex ideas to non-specialists—clients, executives, and decision-makers—so that they can act on the information. I enjoy finding clear ways to present complicated topics, and I look forward to honing this skill even further in college and throughout my career.
Ultimately, I chose to major in actuarial science because it aligns with who I am—a curious, analytical, and detail-oriented person who enjoys applying math to real-life situations. I see it as a path where I can constantly learn, make a positive impact, and build a rewarding career. I’m excited to begin this journey in college and take full advantage of every opportunity to grow within the field.
