A Winner Doesn't Need Much by Matthew - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

The well-renowned prize should not ever be belittled; the decade-long tradition of choosing the one who has benefited the greatest to science and knowledge alike has found it's place with many people. So what makes it so special? What is the difference between your average human rights activist and Nadia Murad, winner of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Award?

A winner has a story. The most notable scientists, activists, and other contributors to history all have one. It's worth noting that each and every one of these people didn't just go from start to finish. There is a journey: A line that can't be skipped. Nadia Murad, for example, was taken from her hometown, Kocho, and held by the Islamic State for three months when she was 21. Her experience incited her efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict in the world. Every winner has story that has defined them, allowing them to be capable of great things.

The ability to act for change is equally important. Now, what would be so great about a story with no action? Some may find it surprising, but even novelists are reshaping society as we know it. The unknowing force has changed our spiritual sense of connection with the world. According to record, Kazuo Ishiguro, the winner of the Noble Prize in Literature in 2017, has taken action to improve society "in novels of great emotional force." He single-handedly shook the world with his moving novels. Superstitions may arise, but it's no doubt that taking steps to improve the world around us is a quality of a true winner.

We created a prize that would reward the discoveries that have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind. So, how is it that a winner doesn't need much, yet, we find it so hard to choose from your average Joe and a true Noble Prize winner? Well, the process is an act of finding a needle in a haystack. In our world, there is a constant crave for innovation, whether it's for peace or science. As we discover more about ourselves and the world around us, the choice becomes more difficult than ever before. Who is worthy of the Noble Prize? Well, let me give you a small hint: a small story if you will. He or she has a web of experiences that make them powerful in ways we could only dream of. With willpower, they put together the puzzle left behind by their previous counterparts and crack into what seems like a never-ending battle that we set ourselves up for: improvement for mankind.
