Why Start Later? by Matthew - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
I know you. I've been in your shoes once before. The weekend is coming up and you have a bunch of homework from every class, but all you want to do is go party with your friends and sit around at home and play that new Legend of Zelda game that just came out. I mean, that's great and I wish you luck in those dungeons, but before you do any of that, I have one question for you: why? Why would you want to put off those assignments until later while you go and party first?
Saying that you want to go and play before your work is done is like saying that you want to put the rest of your life on hold while you go out for a short while. Is ruining the rest of your life really worth spending a couple of hours with your friends? Trust me, it's not worth it at all. There's always that next time you can go and play. Your friends will always be there for you to hang out with. Link will still be waiting for you to tell him to smash those pots. Your future is not something to joke around about.
Now while your grades and school are extremely important at this time in your life, the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" does, indeed, hold some merit. If you never socialize and you always have your face stuck in a book, your socialization and communication skills will suffer and that means no nice, high paying job for you. What you need to find is the perfect medium where you can perfectly balance between work and play, but not too much of one over the other.
If you want my advice, I would suggest doing all of your work as soon as you can before you go out and play. That way, you have all of your work done and you don't have to worry about it again while you are out playing with your friends. Trust me, kid, if you want to succeed in your life, work before play is always preferable in the face of deadlines. Deadlines for assignments are there for a reason. They help you stay on track. Plan accordingly to those rules and guidelines and you should have no problems with school from here on out. Stay frosty.
