Building a Better Tomorrow for All People, of All Creeds by Mason - December 2018 Scholarship Essay
I believe there are two necessary qualities that a recipient of the Nobel Prize must possess: Open mindedness and vision. Without these two qualities, the Nobel Prize begins to lose its meaning.
A visionary is someone who is always thinking forward. Fulfilling the status quo is not enough for them, rather they build the future. I believe a recipient needs to demonstrate not only a history of success and innovation but also intend to continue their work in whatever field for which they are being recognized for. In this way, the Nobel Prize becomes a catalyst instead of a completion award. It will act as a motivator for the recipient to continue their work with a newly invigorated spirit. It will also serve as a form of credential allowing them to be internationally recognized and renowned giving them powerful networking abilities.
Mindfulness is just as important as being a visionary, if not more. We live in an ever-divided country and world, and so a Nobel Prize recipient needs to demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures and ideologies. The Nobel Prize is a symbol of human achievement, innovation, and success that the entire world looks to for hope. If the recipient is unwilling to realize this and does not respect others’ opinions, ideologies, religions, or cultures, then they are undeserving of this award. There is a difference between disagreeing and disrespecting that must be recognized.
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the world, having been given out a mere 590 times in the past 117 years. People around the world look to those receiving these awards as hope for the future and as such recipients need to demonstrate care for the future of all people, of all creeds.
