Exploring the World Through Water: My Favorite Non-Traditional Way to Learn by Maslen - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
I have found the best way to learn isn't always in books or classrooms. It seems a bit cliché, but for me it’s being out in nature, especially near water. Being outside helps me connect with what I'm learning. Whether it's exploring the ocean, digging around in a river, or fishing on a lake, I find that being in nature helps learning make more sense.
Water has always played a huge role in my learning. As an oceanography major at Florida Tech., I’m naturally drawn to the ocean. But even outside of my studies, I love to be near the water. The sounds, smells, and sights of water have always been my happy place. Whether it’s understanding how tides work or watching the ocean’s rhythm, I can see the concepts I’ve learned in the classroom come to life.
But learning through nature isn't just about my major. Recently, I decided to try something completely different, learning to play golf. At first glance, golf might not seem connected to my love for water and nature, but it's actually a great way to engage with the outdoors in a new setting. Florida Tech. is surrounded by golf courses, and I thought it would be a fun way to meet new people and challenge myself in a different way.
Golf is teaching me patience and focus, qualities also important in my oceanography studies. When I’m out on the golf course, surrounded by nature and the occasional water hazard, I feel a different connection to being outside. It’s not just about hitting the ball, it’s about understanding the landscape, feeling the wind, and being present in the moment. Plus, learning a new skill like golf helps me step out of my comfort zone and engage with others outside of my usual circle of oceanography students.
One of the things I enjoy most about learning through nature is that it’s a break from the digital world. I think it goes without saying that we spend too much time on our phones and computers. Out in nature, I can disconnect and focus on what’s around me. Whether I’m studying marine life in a tide pool or trying to improve my golf swing, being outdoors helps me relax and learn in a more intuitive way.
So whether I'm exploring the ocean or trying a new sport like golf, being outside helps me connect with what I'm learning on a deeper level. It’s a way to step outside the classroom, challenge myself in new ways, and appreciate nature. As I continue at Florida Tech., I’m excited to keep learning through my studies and through hands-on experiences to keep me engaged and always learning.
