The One Book High School Students Should Read by Mary - February 2015 Scholarship Essay
For those that love to read books and are always reading, one book they should read before graduation is Speak by Laurie Halse. This book is more directed to girls but that does not mean it is not a good read for any one. The book follows a girl going into her freshman year of high school, who was raped by a senior boy weeks before school started at a house party. The book follows her struggles through her first year of high school and her home life.
This is a book that, at least, every girl should read before graduation because it shows that one should not keep everything bottled up. The book shows that not everything about high school is a spectacular thing, and it gives a huge insight of those people around us who are dealing with demons but not actually showing them to others and how much they are actually hurting inside. This book is a must read for girls who believe that upperclassmen boys in school are all perfect and mature and sweet, because in reality that is not true for certain boys. The book is one that will show girls that they don't have to stay silent if something bad has been done to them and it also shows that they can make it through the tough times.
This book will teach students that hitting rock bottom is not a bad thing. Rock bottom is only a firm spot for one to gain footing again and start to rebuild themselves up. The book also teaches girls (and boys) that bottling secrets up is not good for the body or mind. The book shows students that it is okay to talk to teachers or counselors because their main purpose on campus is to help students.
