Volunteerism by Mary - May 2018 Scholarship Essay
My first volunteering job was a breakfast club, in which you give the homeless food and necessities, but we didn’t do that. On the contrary, they took me to a women’s homeless center, where they were having a birthday party for a boy but it was also a farewell party for him and his mother. She found a job that paid enough for her to move into a one-room motel. The party was in a kitchen combined with the dining room, the size of a closet. The child’s clothes were worn out and had tears all over, but otherwise, that didn’t stop his face lighting up with a smile. It was the boy’s first Birthday party, his family just never had enough money to have that luxury. The boy gave me a thank you hug that day, for being nice to him. That’s when I knew I wanted to help someone have what they couldn’t have.
Beginning with me volunteering at harvest time, where we pack clothes and food for the less fortunate and we also helped on their Christmas event, also known as a toy drive, by packing toys in bags for many families so they could have yet another Christmas. Another entailment was helping at pet rescue by Judy because a pet is what makes a family whole. Animals just want to be loved, and it’s a privilege of seeing their wish come true by joining a family. Also, participating in a book drive hosted by Seminole high school, where we gave books out for free, furthermore helping a lot of kids and their families that didn’t have money for books. We also read to them and played games with them in which we got to know them better individually. In addition, Key club threw a Christmas party for seniors that didn’t have families, we helped make their Christmas a little brighter. Me becoming involved in the volunteer entailed a lot more than what I’ve accomplished but I’m still working on it.
I was also able to participate in my school's athletic training. While I was there I got the chance to expand my knowledge of the medical field. I also got to learn how to treat and dress a proper wound, and I also one on one hands-on experience while working with several types of athletes’ injuries. Once I was the senior of Athletic training I had to teach others to become a genuine and hardworking student athletic trainer and how everything was done and why it was done. I not only had to teach them skills such as tapping and wrapping, but I also had to teach them how to problem-solve by themselves. In many situations, we are the first ones to come in contact or see the injury and how it happened, so one must know what to do when this situation occurs.
I have had the opportunity to learn how to help others any way possible, to appreciate what I have, to never take anything for granted, and finally to give to the less fortunate what I already have enough of. With the help of my mother, we have begun to make bags of life necessities such as food, drinks, toothbrush etc., for the homeless. Every change I have I share and convince people to follow my footsteps and help others even if it’s giving them a reason to smile or just donating money because of a little act of kindness and change somebody’s life. I still have a lot to learn and to finish entailing but I’m glad I can say that I helped in the community.
Having experienced these events, I was able to expand my knowledge and I was also able to evolve as a person. While volunteering in many animal and medical based locations I gave the opportunity to learn more about animals and their body and the same with humans, which prove to be very resourceful in college when taking science courses. Being able to have a fast-paced situation and a one-on-one experience with injuries will help me succeed because if I am ever put in a situation where I must make an expeditious decision, I will not feel pressured or rushed. The skills I acquired may also help me in my future career and in life decision, I may take.
