When I Become a Teacher ... by Mary - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I graduated from Northampton Community College in May 2016 earning an Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. As an adult learner, I am continuing my education toward a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Drexel University this fall. My goal is to become an elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania, specifically, within my hometown school district.

The most important thing I want to impress upon my future students is for them to develop a love of learning. My personal advocacy in sharing my views includes my future plans to create an after-school learning club which supports science and social studies as time often limits these subjects in today’s classrooms. This club could take many forms – it could focus on one particular grade level, or it could cross levels so that older children may be mentors for younger ones. An after-school learning club would address taking the time to explore new learning in fun ways, stretching subjects and content, complementing arts activities, no testing, a club where children can comment and share ideas and stories, those which also could springboard future lessons. A club where children will discover learning, and not realize that they are doing it. Above all, they will have fun and develop new friendships. I believe a learning club such as this would create and light a spark in children wherein it may fall back onto their regular classroom learning and encourage success.

I am excited to be continuing my studies and working towards my goals.
