One Nation Under God, With Liberty, and Justice For All by Mary - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I would teach AP US History to high school juniors and seniors. The history of the United States is something that anyone of any country, age, or ethnicity can relate to and be absolutely fascinated with. There is so much that the world does not know and can learn from the admirable history of the US. The revolution inspires many to stand up for what they believe in, because they always have a chance to make a difference even when you are they’re the underdog. The civil war teaches us that we should stand together as a nation despite our differences. The violence and racist acts of segregation, the significance of historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, and how they stood up for equality. The catastrophes such as 9/11 that show kids that we should not take people for granted, that any day could be our last, and that it is our responsibility to stand together as a nation. The people involved in America’s history are monumental and will forever be honored all around our nation. Students can learn from the mistakes that the people of history have made, and use that knowledge to make history in the future.
US history is a subject that everyone can benefit from and the best part about teaching an AP class would be that the students would genuinely care about what they are learning about which would also lead to class discussions. They would not just discuss the facts, but they would talk about why things happened, what are some similar instances that occur in today’s society, and what the US can do to prevent mistakes that they have made in the past. I would also teach my students on how to be a leader, think outside of the box, understand the political views of history, and teach them that they can make history too. I would want my children to know that they are capable of reaching their full potential. Along with history, comes some sensitive topics like segregation, terrorism, and political views. Those are great ways to really apply those subjects to our lives. That’s why I love history so much, because it applicable to today and it shows us how far America has come from even before 1776 to today.
Teaching history would be a challenge, but I have a passion for the subject. History applies to all subjects such as literature, science, and math. I think it is a miracle that America is still standing today after the things our nation has survived. I would teach kids to significance of America from a national and international standpoint. I want to teach about the spectacular things america has done from starting a nation from colonies of a few people versus the British to today and how the choices we make as a nation are creating history.
