Knowing What I Know Now by Marvin - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

After four years of being in high school, as a senior I have experienced plenty of ups and downs. There were semesters where I completely nailed it and stayed focused on my studies. Then there were times when I loss focus and set myself back from reaching my goals of making honor roll or 1st chair of the marching band’s trombone section. If I could go back and do things differently I would certainly give my all in every class and take advantage of every opportunity that I was given. I have learned many lessons, some of them the hard way. However, every one of these lessons refined me as a student and helped prepare me in my quest to pursue a college education.

If I were to give one piece of advice to incoming high school students I would stress the importance of not missing out on any opportunities because you never know what may come of them. You may be surprised by what awaits you behind what could look to be the most unpromising door. Even the smallest decisions can very well change your entire life, for better or worse. Any and every chance must be taken, be it deciding to play a sport, participating in an extracurricular activity, or even taking on a new job.

For example, my sophomore year I had an opportunity to play for our high school basketball team. I knew I was skilled enough. I knew I had what it took to make the team but I psyched myself out. I didn’t even go to tryouts. At the time I didn’t understand why I decided not to try out but I knew I regret it dearly. I was better than most of my 2016 classmates but I allowed my fear to get the best of me. Who knows what could have happened had I tried out. This is why I want to encourage future high school students to not allow their fears to control them. Don’t let fear of the unknown alter their decisions and set them off course. By taking advantage of every opportunity they are given they will have experiences that could take them anywhere.
