Unveiling Determination through Small Steps. by Martina - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Dear Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Committee,

I am Martina Cao, a proud and ambitious senior year student, setting foot onto the verge of realizing my dreams. It is with great humility, aspiration, and trepidation that I apply for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship as I seek to navigate the next phase of my academic journey. My perspectives and ambitions have been shaped, emphatically, by my diverse interests in Psychology and Theatre/Performing Arts. I aim to attend a highly esteemed institution like Florida State University, Florida International University, New York University, Savannah College of Art & Design, New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, or University of Miami to further broaden and deepen these interests.

What primarily fuels my academic perseverance is an inherent dynamism, an obsession to master what I undertake and the exquisite joy of envisioning an objective, ardently working towards it and ultimately, witnessing its successful culmination. This persistence finds essence in my statement: Once I get an objective in my head, I have a strong drive to accomplish it; I won’t stop until I reach it. My achievements, both academic and personal, highlight this evident aspect of my character. My word is a testament to the fact that it is driven by a passion that permeates into every role I undertake, be it a student, a daughter, or a friend.

I have discovered over the years that the key to successful learning, and life, is to work on small goals that help motivate me to continue. The ‘one step at a time’ methodology has significantly aided me in staying focused on my goals. The complexity of Human Psychology intertwined with the marvels of Theatre/Performing Arts entails grasping meticulous details through a persistent and gradual learning approach. My high cumulative GPA of 4 throughout high school is a clear indication of my dedication and efforts in this regard.

Being a woman of Hispanic descent shapes my experience uniquely, offering fruitful insights stemming from diverse cultures. This has imbued me with increased empathy and understanding, of not just individuals, but societies and cultures at large. These experiences, I believe, are primed to positively augment my academic and social experience at college.

In conclusion, my motivation encircles my passion for my studies, my inherent drive to accomplish goals, and incremental success achieved through a focussed pathway. I profoundly understand that each day beckons new opportunities for learning and growth, and I am prepared to witness and seize them all in my stride. I am confident that this scholarship will not just serve as a financial aid, but also a morale booster prompting me to reach pinnacles unreached.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Martina Cao
