My Life is Based on a True Story by Marnie - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

The question about what would be my senior yearbook quote is actually kind of funny. Partly because it’s been a quite a while since I was in high school, and partly because when I was in high school I wasn’t very outgoing. Today I am more confident and can speak in front of five hundred people, or more if the situation calls for it. I am not sure what my quote would have been back then, but today it would be something along the lines of, “My life is based on a true story.” My sister said this to me once; I am not sure where she got it from but it is now a favorite. I actually had a t-shirt made with that on it with a comedic puff of purple smoke behind it, reminiscent of Bugs Bunny and the Acme Anvil Company.

Some aspects of my life have been a little unexpected – hence the reason that quote would be great for me. I have done a variety of work from event planning, to investigations and background checking, to managing an LMS for online certification – in my current position. Previously I worked at a railroad and became a certified brakeman (I was training to be an engineer, but was pulled in another direction before my certification was complete). I even briefly ran a backhoe! Trying new things and learning new skills is what keeps life fresh and new. Having a family has brought a whole host of new adventures as well.

My life has made many twists and turns. I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up, not until recently. I never thought I would do and see the things that I have, and I am not sorry for the paths that I have taken, nor for the ones that have fallen before me. I am thankful for the things that I have and the people I have met. I also look forward to the new adventures that lay in wait for me. Going back to school is a part of the adventure in front of me now. It is both exciting and a little nerve wracking (mostly exciting). Wish me luck!
