A Leader: More than Just a Voice by Mark - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are extremely vital for college success and can be used in multiple situations. A leader can be many things and can take multiple meanings in certain situations. For example, college life can become a challenging academic adventure and thus, people may want to create a study group to pass classes. Someone must have the leadership ability to want to create this study group by inviting others. To have the courage to ask others not only for help, but for their time to help others shows them that you have a plan and a goal in mind, identifying qualities in a leader. Taking leadership isn't only about creating a study group however; a simple question in class could become a display of leadership. Most people are too afraid to ask questions during a professor’s lecture, but someone must take initiative and ask the question, thus becoming the symbolic leader. Soon, others will follow and ask questions, but someone must take that first step. Making friends can easily involve some leadership skills. Coming to a new school, away from all of their past friends, can be a frightening, new experience for many. Their first reaction would be to remain cautious and wait until someone approaches them. Taking that initiative and talking to others is a definite skill that a leader must possess. Lastly, a leader must also have the ability to just lead and show others how to be a good example. Whether it be in a class, a club, or a sport, a leader must be the one who others look up to and learn from.

However, do all of these examples and situations equate to success? In one short answer, I believe they do. Being successful in college means getting good grades, making the most of the education, and meeting the right people. Being a leader will attract many of the hardworking and dedicated scholars to follow you and these same people can influence you to receive the best possible education. Becoming a leader may not guarantee success, but it can lead down a good path in seeking a very desirable career, which I think is the most important thing to get out of college.
