I would love to teach ALGEBRA! by Marjorie - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a College Professor, what class would I teach and why?
Since I was a little girl, my dream was to become a medical doctor. No worries, this little bit of information is related to answering the question of the essay. As I was explaining, my dream was to become a doctor. I loved Math and Science, both of which I would need to get into a good university and further pursue my dream. I mastered seventh grade math and tested out of eight grade math and was put into an algebra class. I was so excited. I am very competitive so the opportunity to skip a math class and advance was appealing. The teacher, Ms. Smith was also my seventh-grade teacher so she knew my potential. From the first day of learning what letters and numbers could do, I was “hooked!” I appreciated the teaching style of Ms. Smith and I ended up getting an “A” in that class. For middle school, this grade did wonders for my self-esteem and confidence.
By excelling in my Algebra class, this made it easier to understand Science, especially Physics and other math classes that I took including Calculus and Statistics. I was so excited to tutor other students who struggled with Algebra also allowed me the opportunity to show others that Algebra is the gateway class to “surviving” school and life. Using the equations, allows a person to figure out logically why numbers and letters and graphs can lead to organizing thoughts and plans. I love to teach and watch students understand problems that weeks ago they found extremely difficult. I would be that professor who would intertwine life lessons with Algebraic expressions. Hopefully influencing a student, the way I was influence in seventh grade.
