Lesson learned by Marjorie - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Through my years in school I have met many teachers that have given me different lessons to learn in order to succeed and move on in life. From learning to be patient to asking questions about anything I am unsure of, so I can always understand what I am about to do. Some have told me to stay quiet and do everything they tell me to do. Others have told me to listen and obey in order to do things right, but the most important lesson that a teacher once taught me was to think for myself.
Through the years many teacher’s help students learn how to think, read and write, but sometimes they forget to show students how to think for themselves. Students learn how to think about a question or statement but their thoughts are on how others actually think; their thoughts are only based on facts that they know and memorize. Many forget to think for themselves, to express their own opinions and not others. To open their minds to thinking about how they think an object could look better or work better. They forget that the reason why teachers teach us is to help us amplify are understanding and knowledge of all the things in the world and how they work.
Teachers teach us many things through our life, they teach us lessons that we do end up using most of the time, like asking questions when in doubt or listening to instructions before doing something so you know how to do it right. Some teachers though will give you that one lesson in life that you know you will never forget and will need to use it for the rest of your life, and it really comes in handy. In my experience for anyone who asks me, the most important lesson a I have learned from a teacher has been to think for myself.
