Dinner with Gandhi by Maritsa - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any historical figure it would be Gandhi. Gandhi was the wisest person I have ever learned about. He was the greatest leader because he impacted so many lives. Gandhi was all for being peaceful, that nothing was achieved if won with violence. He believed that all of India should be free, that they should not fight, and that the British Empire would never have his obedience until they were free. Gandhi once said “an eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind” enforcing that he would not lower himself to their standards. In fact he almost killed himself to prove his point about violence.
When we are at dinner I could ask him what he thinks of the world today, and if he could change it, how would he do so. I know that he simply wanted to make India better but the United States could learn some great things from him. With all the police brutalities going on he could relate to when he would get beat up by them and not fight back. I wonder what he would comment about it. Does somebody just take it like he use to or is there some way of protecting ourselves from getting hurt?
Secondly, he could help me understand the meaning of life a little bit more. I understand that we were put on the earth for a reason, but what are our reasons if one day “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” (2 Peter 3:10). Till this day comes what do I have to complete? We put ourselves through all the struggles, pain, drama, and suffering, but what for? As of now I could see him saying something like life is a canvas and you are the painter type stuff, but I want to know what he really and truly thinks about everything.
In conclusion I would have dinner with Mahatma Gandhi because he is an inspiration to me, he protested non-violence, and he knows a lot about life and what changes we could to do make it a whole lot better. I see Gandhi as the biggest role model because he believed in what was right and tried so hard to protect his country.
