Working on Experience by Marisa - June 2024 Scholarship Essay

Work experience has been the foundation of my success as an adult returning to college. I have learned productive multitasking, effective communication, and leadership skills. My work experience has been key to building my personal brand and skill set for success. Through my informal education and work experience, I have the confidence to return to school to pursue my passion to become a healthcare provider.

Multitasking is a skill that has prepared me to work full-time while also going to school full-time. I learned this skill by working a job that required multiple facets of me. Learning how to listen, collect key information, problem solve, and document concisely has served me well in my ability to perform work and school tasks successfully. I am able to work and study at the same time without sacrificing quality in either of these areas. This allows me to provide for my family and stay successful in my education.

Academic settings can often require students to work in group settings. To be successful in these conditions requires me to work with multiple personality types and communication styles. My work experience has been heavily involved in working with multiple groups of people, all with different communication and personality types. To be a successful employee and helpful agent, I have learned to listen and understand clearly what people are saying. I am now comfortable and confident leading and working with groups of people to accomplish a goal.

My company has provided me with opportunities to be a leader throughout my time employed with them. These opportunities have required me to be an internally driven, creative, and passionate individual. The success and encouragement I have gained from these experiences have allowed me to become a leader, not only at work but in my day-to-day life. I have the courage, drive, and internal motivation to do whatever I dream of. I am now pursuing my dream of being a registered nurse.

Many people discount the true benefit that education outside of a classroom can provide. I am proof that experience learned and earned in day-to-day jobs can provide an amazing skill set for success in school. All of my informal education has shaped me into a self-driven, passionate, and effective student. I am more prepared for the world of academics as an adult returning to school with real-world experiences.
