Nursing Philosophy by MARINA - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do” -Rumi. This quote fueled my passion to combine the two things I love, which are science and beauty. After all is nursing an art or science? I am not the conventional nursing student. I am a licensed esthetician and laser technician, who owns her own business. I’ve been an esthetician for four years. I decided a year into esthetics that I wanted to combine the two outlets. My goal is to make everyone feel and look beautiful, inside and out. I have an interest of going into Esthetic dermatology or plastic surgery. The elements to my nursing philosophy encompass art, science and beauty.
Ever-since I was a little girl I always had an eye for beauty. Being the second oldest of five girls, I always was looked up to as a care giver. I often would help my younger sisters with school work, learning to swim, helping then when they were sick and giving them makeup lessons. I was born and will die a very empathic and caring person. This is why I know that I will be a good nurse. I want to deliver compassion to my patients as well as their families. I have a keen sense of other peoples feeling and can often tune into peoples emotions-good or bad. I first started off my life thinking I just wanted to to work in esthetics, but then realized the potential in nursing. It was at this point where I knew I could make the greatest impression on peoples lives on a mental, emotional and physical level.
The core of nursing to me combines many factors like compassion, understanding, caring, expertise, drive and critical thinking. If you were sick in a bed you would want the best care possible and thats the kind of nurse I strive to be! We are patient advocates. Save one life your a hero save 100’s your a nurse! You must empathize with people when they are going through tough times in their lives. We should treat everyone with dignity and justice and try to pass the least possible judgement. I always said that true character is what you do when know one is looking. The patients are very venerable and are likely unaware of the quality of care they are being given, so we should never cut corners at out own benefit. To deliver the best care possible care, we as nurses have to be knowledgable, credible and accountable. Thats why I think the BSN in 10 is essential for delivering exceptional care. Nurses don’ t just go to school and stop learning you are learning everyday and if your not you wont succeed or flourish. This in the field of Estetics is particularly true. In the beauty industry there are new lasers and different treatments coming out every couple of months, thus you must keep up.
My vision for my self as a nurse would be ultimately to receive my NP. That has always been a goal for me. I write all my goals in a planner-short or long that I want to achieve. I was able to cross off getting into Adelphi’s nursing program, when many had their doubts. I never let peoples perception of me hinder me, I always and always will follow my own path to success. I wrote it down one day in my book and one day I will check it off. I plan on having a successful holistic medical spa. I believe the business will always keep me grounded and guide me in forever living a healthy lifestyle. We ourselves must strive for wellness and want to be emulated and educate others. Some steps to good health include healthy relationships, healthy food, exercise and fluids. I want to give a holistic approach to beauty combing natural and scientific measures. I believe that a balance between medicine and natural is the key to longevity. Such measures I want to incorporate would include: a yoga studio attached to the med-spa, acupuncture/massage, herbal tea offerings and IV vitamin drips.
I belief that you must practice what you preach! Practicing beneficence is a way of life for use nurses. I plan on donating some of the profits to psoriasis, acne and skin cancer research. These three diseases are near and dear to my heart. I my self struggle with psoriasis, acne and had a pre melanoma lesion on my back that I had to get removed, leaving me scared. I was lucky
to have caught it early and be fine. Since that day I been a melanoma advocate and educate my friends and family about the importance of SPF and the dangers of tanning and tanning beds. This is the beauty mark I ultimately want to leave on society. They say…“ The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” - Eleanor Roosevelt.
