Optimistic Lesson- Life is not fair. by Marily - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

There are various types of teachers in the world. The most familiar, and the most thought of, are qualified school teachers. Teachers vary. As a matter of fact, they come in all ages and forms. A teacher can be a grandfather, brother, friend, or even a tutor on YouTube, like Hank Green (from Crash Course). I am an eighteen-year-old incoming college freshman, and (so far) I have had about 50 teachers, all of which have made an impact in my life. Right now, even though legally I am an adult, my parents continue to educate me about life. As can be seen, they were my first teachers, and with their guidance, my goal in life is to learn to become a respectful, humble, sophisticated and an optimistic individual. I will accomplish my goal by listening and learning from my parents and teachers. There is an important lesson to be learned every day. The most important lesson I have learned from a teacher is that life is not fair. My teacher is my mother.
My strict, yet loving, classy, yet down to earth, mother continues to explain to me about the secrets to living life. One might gush that the world gives equal to full opportunities, while another might fuss about how life is just a dark hole. My mother says that life is not fair because sometimes situations do not turn out the way we want them. My goal is to be optimistic. The world is not black nor white. It is not black because there is always a chance to fix “broken” situations or people. The world is not white, because even those who are born privileged, have seen the world at its darkest. There is so much to learn, and so much to prepare for. My goal is to be respectful to everyone. You see, no one is born with the ability to choose where they come from, nor who their parents are. For example, all the children born into poor families did not choose that life for themselves. But what can I, a member of society, work on? Knowing that life is not fair, for every individual has taught me how to be respectful to everyone. In an aspiring person’s point of view, the world was once dark, then it was perhaps gray, and hopefully it is now white. My parents have shaped me into an understanding and optimistic individual. My goal is to be humble. I learned that life is not about being selfish but about helping and learning from others.
My teacher is my mother. When she tells me, “life is not fair”, I think about everything I have and own. I think about how privileged I was born and how my life goals are different, because of that. Even though legally I am an adult, my parents continue to educate me about life. I know that becoming a competent respectful, humble, sophisticated, and an optimistic individual may take time, but this is the first stepping stone to a successful member of society. There are various types of teachers in the world. As a matter of fact, they come in all ages and forms. There is an important lesson to be learned every day and you never know who might be your teacher, so just follow the Lord: He is your teacher.
