It is Not Just About the Hard Work, It is About the Effect and What it Means to Others by Marielle - December 2018 Scholarship Essay
Every Nobel Peace Prize winner has achieved something spectacular. Whether it is ending feuds within a country to fighting for civil rights, these winners have done their part for the world. However, I’ve often wondered, how would I help choose the next Nobel Peace Prize winner?
There are many steps in the process of establishing a Nobel Peace Prize winner. For over a year the committee receives nominations, makes lists, into the finally reveal the Laureate that receives the prize. Obviously, the committee has very hard decisions to make. The way I see it, I want to know the effect of the nominee’s actions and what people outside of the committee have to say. I find the impact and the opinions of people being affected by the nominee’s behavior of the utmost importance when deciding who should receive that fabulous prize.
Anyone can tell that someone who receives the Nobel Peace Prize has worked harder than almost anyone. So if I were to look at nominees, I wouldn’t look into how hard they worked, because I already know they did. I would look at other contributions, how their actions effected people. I would look at how much the nominees have changed the world for the better.
If I saw that the effects of the nominee’s actions were positive and did make a difference, I would then get opinions from people who have been affected by the changes the nominee has made. I can see the statistics and the overall basics of the outcome, but I would want to know how individuals felt. I would go up to someone who was given an education or was given food and water to live when they were so close to death. People who have gone through something like that, would want to share their praise for who helped them through a difficult time or gave them new opportunities.
In the end, only one winner will be chosen. But if I was on the committee, I would make sure that I know exactly the effects their contributions had, and some of the individuals who received the help given.
