My Broadcasting Class by Marie - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

My freshman year of high school was a stressful time. I had just moved to Tennessee, I was starting at a new school where I knew no one, and I was very lonely. I was not excited about school, and didn’t have a passion. All my classes were very basic core classes and rotation class that would fill up time. I had one more slot open, and my counselor suggested a broadcasting course. I was interested and new it would fill in an elective credit. I had no idea how important this class would become to me.
When I started the class I was immediately interested in learning all about camera angles, directing, and editing videos. It quickly became my favorite class. The rest of my day, however, left me lonely. I still did not have any friends, and was not familiar with the school, but one day I decided to talk to the girl who sat next to me in class. We became friends both in and out of school. Without this class I would not have met my best friend and who knows how the rest of my high school experience would have gone.
By the end of my freshman year I had made several friends in the class. So when sophomore year came around I was very excited about continuing broadcasting. It had become more than just a place to make new friends, I actually enjoyed the class itself. I was addicted to editing videos, it was the first time in a long time that I had a passion. Without this class my high school experience would have been drastically different. Broadcasting brought me happiness and a distraction from the rest of the things going on in school, it brought me new friends and kept relationships with them throughout the year. It was a class that shaped the rest of my high school career, and I wouldn’t have had the same experience without it.
