Enthusiastic Design From a Different Perspective by Maribel - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

My name is Maribel Rios Torres and I’m a senior at Alisal High School, a graduating class of 2023. After graduation, I will attend Sacramento State University to become an interior designer and obtain a bachelor's degree while minoring in Spanish. When thinking about my future, I always see myself always adjusting to what people enjoy while also being a support to them. With the additional knowledge I’d be attaining from my studies, I will be able to enter a profession that will be growing annually. Alongside become a supportive person whenever the opportunity arises.

When I was younger, I found a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for construction workers and their overall buildings. From being able to see their initial start to even seeing their result through their dedication. What had continuously captivated me was the designing involved in the building and how sometimes the thought of changing certain items that weren’t as appealing. I realized that I enjoyed the organization and collaboration of being able to work as a group. This is the kind of job fulfillment I can only dream of. I have picked up some community skills that have allowed me to engage and converse with numerous people. It might seem oriented towards the medical field, but I do believe in sustaining a healthy relationship while also following a career plan which is why I stand for mental health and knowing the fundamental values of such after being involved with an Emergency Medical Technician/Responder class and receiving certain credentials. Several of my community engagements have been involved with Monterey County Binational Health Week in which I had been a community guidance concierge. Through the community event, I promoted prevention and early intervention health services; reduced health burdens, alleviated barriers to healthcare access, and assisted the community with any concerns and information. The most recent form of community engagement has been a club I’ve been engaged in since 2022 called Circle of Friends. I’m currently a secretary of the club and I ensure that everyone provides excellent advocating services by assisting neurotypical students in developing social skills and encouraging self-management. With that being said, I’m fully committed to understanding the different backgrounds and situations that people undergo in collaborative work.

In various ways, being able to receive an education to me means a given opportunity to follow my passion and to be a role model for my siblings and my parents who’d given up countless opportunities. By being given an opportunity to receive an education that is truly valued and held with high esteem, allows me to be a guide to them whenever they require support. Being able to receive this scholarship opens an opportunity to believe that they are capable of achieving anything they set their mind to, especially while uniting as a whole through standing up for certain civil rights, health, housing, education, and many other events. All in all, I hope pursuing this major will help me accomplish all my dreams of supplying my full support in anyone who needs so.
