First Gen College Vibes by Mariapaz - August 2018 Scholarship Essay

The topic of podcast, First Gen College Vibes, would focus on the the challenges first generation college students face while in college. I want to hear from current or former students any suggestions as to how they overcame any challenges and any advice that would make the college experience much easier. College is an exciting experience and it can be difficult to navigate the different aspects of college while balancing other responsibilities.

Being a first-generation college student, I often times found it difficult to discuss any issues regarding college with my parents. They helped me in the best way they could, but it was limited due to their limited exposure to college themselves. I relied on my friends for help and I would have loved to meet other students who have gone through the same experience. The podcast will be the opportunity to not only feel connected with others, but to also understand that they are not alone.

Getting a college education is one of the best investments one can make and an even greater investment for the students whose parents weren’t fortunate in receiving a college education. They want what is best for their children and the podcast allows their children to get the help they need. It also opens a better means of communication between the parents and their children. The parents can tune in and understand that college is stressful and at times difficult to navigate. In addition they are also learning more about the different aspects of college. I hope the podcast, First Gen College Vibes, creates a space to that makes college easier in all aspects that is college.
