What College Genuinely Means To Me by Mariah - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

I've always felt like an outcast as a young, dark-skinned African American female. I always feel as if I don't belong in school or in semi-professional environments, or that I'm not as smart as everyone else. Being a woman in today's world is difficult enough, but being black makes it ten times more difficult. I've had numerous doubts about myself and my talents. Many opportunities have been denied to me because of my appearance. This is not fair to me or the other African Americans who are facing similar challenges.

I've wanted to attend college since I was a little girl. I knew there would be individuals who opposed me, but I was determined not to let that deter me. Going to college was always a goal of mine. I aspired to be like the black folks I saw on television going to college and then succeeding in life. My family has a small number of college graduates, but I intend to join the ranks of those who have. I want to establish a good reputation for myself and the black community. I want to establish a good reputation for myself. I want to inspire my younger family members to be more than what the media depicts 90% of the black community to be.

I want to go to college not only to aid others around me but also to demonstrate that we are all capable of committing to and striving to be the best that we can be. I want to attend college in order to increase representation and diversity in the black community. I believe that by attending college, I will help to increase diversity on campus and in other fields. I understand that diversity of views and ideas in higher education can contribute to more inclusive and equitable campuses.

Finally, attending college would have a significant positive impact on myself and people who resemble me. I want to be able to not only aid others but also show them that it is possible and that giving up is never an option. College will not be easy, but neither will life.
