Patience is key by Mariah - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
By being a teacher, you have big shoes to fill and a lot of pressure on you. What if test scores are not where they should be? What if every single student is failing your class? What if the students just don’t like you and won’t behave in your class? All of these “What ifs?” are possible. All students are different and unique. We as students don’t learn at the same pace as everyone else, and we all have different learning styles such as visual or hands on. There are many pieces of advice I could give teachers to help me and my peers learn more effectively, however, one piece of advice I would give them is: Patience is key.
Having patience is key a component when it comes to children seeking their education. Teachers are often disrespected because we as teenagers don’t like authority figures. Earning respect as a teacher will not come over night. However, if you are patient it will come eventually. Also, as students, we all have different needs and abilities. If half of the class is ready to move on but the other half is still stuck on the same lesson, don’t get frustrated, be patient and wait on the half of the class that seems to be struggling catch up. You may even have to re-teach it in a different way, but they will catch on eventually, just be patient.
There are many different necessities teachers need to be successful in teaching students. It will never be an easy job if you are impatient with the students. If you are a patient teacher, test scores will improve, and you will earn respect. Having patience is very important. All teachers should be patient in gaining a student’s attention; their job will be much easier.
