Reversing the Roles by Mariah - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my, now, thirteen years of education I have grown to admire many of my teachers and grow a new sense of respect for those individuals that go above and beyond to grasp a student’s attention and interest. One of the subjects that has intrigued me the most is science. My teachers over the years have certainly been a large factor as to why science has become a passion of mine. If roles were reversed and I was a teacher, I would unquestionably choose science.
There is something about science that has always drawn me in. The beakers, the dorky goggles, the chemical reactions you can create have always been fascinating. A science teacher has to be a tough subject to teach, as I have seen and struggled personally with grasping certain ideas. Although it may be a more challenging subject to teach; I believe I would enjoy it.
A science teacher has the ability to involve their students in the physical use of an idea or theory. What they teach they can prove through interactive work – which I love. There is so much variety in science, too, that can be taught.
Through all the science classes I have been involved in, my favorite topic has been biology. The dissections, the gene work, it all has caught my attention. If I would be a science teacher, sharing my passion would be the most rewarding part of the job, and I know I would appreciate my science teachers over the years that much more.
