Soft skills is defined on Google as “personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.” In my words, I would describe it as traits that individuals have that allow them to collaborate and work effectively resulting in the best possible outcome. When I think of soft skills a few things come to mind; communication, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and time management. The one that stands out to me the most is time management. Without time management skills, you simply don’t allow yourself to excel in the other soft skills.

Personally, I can attribute why time management has the biggest impact on a successful education. When I was enrolled at Gateway for Dental Assisting I was a full time student, had a full time job, and practiced my practical skills at the designated clinical sites 2 times a week. On top of all of this I was also balancing having a social life and making sure I spent time with my family. I believe that this taught me how to perfect my time management habits and once I perfected this, I was able to improve on the other soft skills that I was lacking in. For example, I would get every assignment done as soon as possible and study from that to then network with other students about the material. Once I learned this method of studying, this not only improved my time management skills, but my communication and teamwork skills as well.

Even though there are multiple different soft skills, time management is the core principle and once perfecting this you can really become skillful in the other types of skills. If I didn’t have time management during school I would have easily fallen behind and my grades would suffer.
