Curiosity VS Chemistry by Maria - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

The most important lesson that I have learned from a teacher is that if wanted to get anything out from his chemistry class, it was to be curious about the world. On the first day of class, my chemistry teacher did the traditional introduction, along with mandatory contact sheets and syllabus. After we were all settled, he began his introductory speech and let us ask questions afterwards. A student in the class asked what his main goal for us was, and his answer was “I am technically not allowed to say this, but my main goal is for you to become curious, I could not care less if you learn anything about chemistry.”
That answer stuck with me for the rest of the year and inspired me to try different activities. It inspired me to join different group organizations and to start taking on different hobbies such as watercolor painting and begin taking German classes. Throughout the year, he always read to us about the new scientific discoveries being made and explained why they were important. He also let us come up with our own experiment and let us test out the problem, always encouraging us to think of new problems and ideas. Learning to be curious was the greatest and most important lesson I have ever learned from any of my teachers because it gave me a new point of view to look at the world.
